I love my teeth!!! I have had many fillings from Dr. Carlston and veneers as well. It feels so good to smile and I am complimented on my teeth regularly now. My teeth look so natural that even my closest friend couldn't pin point what was different about me. I would highly recommend him! The staff was friendly and helpful and the facility was clean and professional. I will definitely be back when in Los Angeles. Angie C., Mountlake, WA

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are restorations that encompass the entire tooth to rebuild damaged areas, restore strength, and prevent future decay and infection. At Carlston Dental Group in West Los Angeles, we use only the highest quality porcelain material for our dental crowns, creating natural-looking and strong results. These crowns provide many advantages over older, metal crowns, which can detract from the smile, and need to be replaced more frequently. Patients who suffer from extensive tooth decay, or chips and cracks in the teeth, can opt to receive dental crowns to repair their smile. In addition, those individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of previously placed metal crowns can visit our office to receive new, more attractive restorations. Using advanced technology, including the CEREC® 3D milling machine, Dr. Carlston creates custom-fit dental crowns in one convenient office visit.

In addition to improving the appearance of the smile, porcelain dental crowns have several benefits, including:

  • Protect the teeth from further damage or decay
  • Eliminate need for more invasive treatments such as extraction or root canal therapy
  • Increase patient comfort while talking and chewing
  • Long-lasting solution to tooth damage

Alternative Treatments

Although dental crowns are a beneficial treatment and have improved with the implementation of CEREC® technology, it is always Dr. Carlston’s goal to provide patients with the most effective, yet least invasive treatment available. While some dentists automatically recommend dental crowns to patients who experience progressed decay, Dr. Carlston takes more time to carefully evaluate each patient’s condition and determine if other methods may be appropriate. Often times, Dr. Carlston finds that porcelain inlays and onlays offer the same benefits as dental crowns, but require less alteration to the natural tooth structure. Inlays and onlays serve a similar purpose as dental crowns, but are only placed over a portion of the tooth, rather than its entirety.

  • Inlays are porcelain restorations that are limited to the top surface of the teeth. These can be used in response to tooth decay or minor structural damage to a tooth.
  • Onlays are similar to inlays, but extend beyond the top surface of the tooth, and over one or more of the tooth’s cusps. These restorations are typically used when more moderate tooth decay or damage occurs.

Both inlays and onlays can be placed during a single dental appointment using the CEREC® milling machine. Because Dr. Carlston uses all-porcelain material, the inlays and onlays placed at his practice are both natural-looking and durable. In addition, the procedure for receiving inlays or onlays requires less tooth preparation, which is in line with Dr. Carlston’s philosophy of minimally invasive, tooth conserving dentistry.
