Your mouth is an integral part of your entire body. When a child has healthy teeth and gums, it helps with eating, speaking, learning, sleeping, and even confidence. Poor oral health can lead to pain, infection, and problems concentrating at school. Dental health is a gateway to lifelong wellness.
**Infants & Toddlers (0–3)**
- Wipe gums after feeding
- Start brushing with a baby toothbrush as soon as the first tooth appears
- Avoid sugary drinks and bottles in bed
**Preschool (Ages 3–5)**
- Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste
- Supervise brushing twice a day
- Talk about how 'clean teeth help your tummy' And how your entire body is connected. The child's pediatrician can help with this.
**Early School Years (Ages 6–8)**
- Let kids choose their own toothbrush
- Reinforce brushing as part of the daily routine
- Limit sugary snacks
**Tweens & Teens (9–13)**
- Stress independence and responsibility
- Teach how bacteria in the mouth can affect the heart and brain
- Provide sports mouthguards if needed
- Encourage flossing and good breath habits
- Include oral health in health or science lessons
- Share this handout at back-to-school nights or parent meetings
- Reinforce the connection between dental health and academic success
- Invite local dentists to speak during health awareness weeks
As a dentist who has treated multiple generations of families, I believe that early education is one of the most powerful tools we have. I no longer treat babies or very young children, but I’m always happy to consult and refer families to trusted pediatric professionals. Once a child is old enough to have a real conversation—usually around age 9—I’m honored to help them grow up with a confident, healthy smile.
Together, let’s teach every child that a healthy mouth is part of a healthy body.
